A Los Angeles police officer has been charged with assaulting and seriously injuring a suspect last year while responding to a domestic violence call, L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón announced Tuesday.
The backstory: According to the District Attorney’s Office, LAPD Officer Garo Garabedian, and other officers responded to a report of domestic violence at a residence on May 29, 2023. While arresting a male suspect, Garabedian “allegedly assaulted him resulting in serious injuries.” The office released no further details of the incident.
From the district attorney: “As law enforcement officers, those entrusted with the responsibility of protecting our community must be held to the highest of standards of integrity and accountability,” said District Attorney George Gascón. “No one is above the law, and we will pursue justice in this case to maintain the public’s faith in those who serve and protect.”
The charges: Garabedian, 42, is charged in Superior Court with two counts of assault under color of authority. If convicted, he faces a maximum of six years and eight months in prison, according to the DA.
What's next: Garabedian is scheduled for arraignment Nov. 21. The officer’s attorney was not immediately available for comment.
