In a presidential tight race, we look closer at Harris and Trump’s campaign strategies

With only a few weeks left in the campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump continue to fight over the last remaining battleground states. Both Harris and Trump are in Pennsylvania today in hopes of swaying last minute voters. But their strategies in getting those voters couldn’t be more different, with Trump focusing on young men and Harris vying for young women and Black men. Joining us this morning on AirTalk to discuss the two presidential campaigns is Nicholas Nehamas, political correspondent for The New York Times and Meridith McGraw, national political correspondent for Politico.

The Salton Sea faces ecological and water conservation problems. What’s the right solution?

The Salton Sea faces ecological and water conservation problems. What’s the right solution?

Southern California farmers are conserving a lot more Colorado River water, but that’s also causing the Salton Sea to dry up faster. That’s because the Salton Sea is filled primarily by agricultural runoff from farms in the Imperial Valley in far Southern California. Those farms have a single source of water: the Colorado River. The Salton Sea is a landlocked, shallow lake in Riverside and Imperial counties. The lakebed has been contaminated for over 100 years with pesticides and other chemicals that create dangerous air pollution for surrounding communities.  Today on AirTalk, we’ll hear about this pressing environmental issue with LAist climate emergency reporter Erin Stone and Michael Cohen, senior associate at the Pacific Institute.

The colorful history of alcohol in Southern California

Take a walk in Downtown L.A. and you’ll be treated to a plethora of breweries and bars. But LA wasn’t always so welcoming to alcohol. In fact, Hollywood was once known for being a booze free zone. The earliest written recordings of wine in Southern California point to the Spanish. Today on AirTalk, we’ll look back on the history of Alcohol in Southern California. Joining us to discuss is, Richard Foss, a culinary historian and the author of ‘Rum: A Global History’

Measure G: Should LA County expand the number of supervisors on its board?

Measure G: Should LA County expand the number of supervisors on its board?

Measure G, if passed this November, would increase the number of L.A. County Supervisors from five to nine. The proposal comes from Supervisors Lindsay Horvath and Janice Hahn, who crafted the measure and have been vocal about needing more members in order to effectively govern LA County. As it stands, each supervisor oversees a district of about 2 million people. In a county that is more populous than most states, Horvath and others agree that expanding and reshaping LA County’s governance is necessary. Those in opposition say the change would cost too much money and drain county resources. Joining us today on AirTalk to discuss the measure is L.A. County Supervisor Holly Mitchell

The difficulties of caring for an aging parent and being the one who needs care

The difficulties of caring for an aging parent and being the one who needs care

Watching a parent get older is difficult, especially when you are tasked to be their primary caregiver. The roles in the relationship start to reverse as the adult child becomes the provider, protector, and main support system for the aging parent. It is also difficult being the parent, who now must rely on their child for care. There can be strains to the relationship as the elderly parent resists losing autonomy while the adult child tries to maintain a sense of control over the parent's well-being. Today on AirTalk, we discuss the stresses and concerns around caring for an aging parent with Donna Benton, director of the Family Caregiver Support Center and associate professor of gerontology at USC.

We also hear from listeners about their experiences caring for an elderly parent. They share what challenges they have faced trying to provide care, and what has been the most rewarding experience in caring for an aging loved one.
