One of one: Shohei Ohtani founds baseball’s 50-50 club, makes history in Dodgers uniform

Dodger fans around the world witnessed superstar Shohei Ohtani join the 50-50 club, something no Major League Baseball player has ever done. The coveted club requires a considerable feat: stealing 50 bases and hitting 50 home runs in one season. And Ohtani did one better, he's now at 51-51. Ohtani broke the record after stealing two bases and hitting two home runs against the Miami Marlins Thursday, stunning fans and players. Then he came back to bat again for his first-ever three homer game as a Dodger. The hit that put him over the top came in the 7th and already was his second thundering homer of the day. Ohtani cleared the first hurdle to the 50-50 club when he stole his 50th base early in Thursday’s game against the Marlins — which he quickly followed up by grabbing his 51st base of the season. Fans at the game got to witness baseball history firsthand: A star player putting his first season playing in Dodger Blue into a potentially historic season.

Central Avenue was a hub for some of jazz’s greatest musicians

Central Avenue was a hub for some of jazz’s greatest musicians

The Dunbar Hotel was the center point of Central Avenue’s jazz scene from the 1920s up into the 1950s. Housing restrictions in L.A. played a major role in the area’s rise to cultural significance, as it was one of the few places Black musicians and artists could stay while touring or move to. But, as housing restrictions lifted, and residents moved to other parts of L.A., Central Avenue’s jazz hub also dissipated. Remnants of the neighborhood’s history can still be found though, especially at the annual Central Avenue Jazz Festival. This year marks its 29th anniversary.

Today on AirTalk, we talk to Sean J. O'Connell, music history lecturer at Cal State Long and Chapman University and author of the book Los Angeles' Central Avenue Jazz, about the history of the festival and Central Avenue’s significance to L.A. 's jazz culture.

Fall is here: Trade in the ice cream and popsicles for toffee and caramel

Back in 1924, a small candy store opened at the LA’s Farmers Market in the Beverly Grove area. Mr. and Mrs. Littlejohn were candy makers from England who moved into a storefront in the space that it still occupies to this day. Now, in its 100th year of operation, the Littlejohn’s legacy lives on through their handcrafted candies. Today, owner Mike Graves, who has run the shop since the 80s, continues the tradition of English toffee, caramel, all-natural ingredients at their two locations. Joining us today on AirTalk’s Food Friday is Littlejohn’s owner Mike Graves.

Feature: New book ‘The De Palma Decade’ breaks down the filmmaker's most prolific era

Although infrequent movie watchers might be most familiar with filmmaker Brian De Palma’s Scarface and Mission Impossible, his most prolific era actually came between 1972-1981, which is what filmmaker and book author Laurent Bouzereau refers to as “The De Palma Decade” in his new book of the same name. Beginning with De Palma’s 1972 film Sisters, and ending with his 1981 film Blow Out, Bouzereau break down the iconic filmmaker’s themes and thought process when developing each work within this decade. For this week’s FilmWeek feature, we’ll sit down with Laurent Bouzereau, author of the new book “The De Palma Decade: Redefining Cinema with Doubles, Voyeurs, and Psychic Teens,” and get into how this pioneer of New Hollywood cinema made his mark.
