The newest wing of the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County and a new community hub, NHM Commons, will open on Nov. 17, officials announced Tuesday.
Why it matters: It’s where you can meet Gnatalie, the first green dinosaur fossil to be mounted for display anywhere in the world and the most complete long-necked dinosaur skeleton on the West Coast.
The details: The expansion on the west side of the Exposition Park campus will be the new permanent home for a then-controversial 1981 mural by artist Barbara Carrasco titled “L.A. History: A Mexican Perspective.”
Lazaro Arvizu Jr., a Tongva artist, has also been commissioned to create bedrock mortar installations as part of the NHM Commons’ garden and plaza, according to the museum.
The backstory: The $75-million project includes 75,000 square feet of space, and was designed with transparent glass so people can see into the museum. Officials say this will help expand the museums' community-centered programming and create opportunities for people to experience NHM, with or without a ticket.
What's next: The museum will host events to celebrate the grand opening, including a free block party on opening day, live music, as well as food and drinks from the new South LA Café.
