Lael Loewenstein

Film Critic, FilmWeek

Lael Loewenstein enjoys a longstanding history in film criticism across a variety of platforms. A former president of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA), she has served as a regular contributor to FilmWeek since 2001. Equally comfortable writing for trade or consumer publications, she has published reviews in Daily Variety and the Los Angeles Times, profiled directors for DGA Quarterly, and previewed new releases for KNBC news and KCET’s Life & Times. As an international film festival correspondent, she filed E! Online’s daily Cannes updates and wrote about Bosnia’s postwar cinematic revival. Lael has been invited to sit on festival juries from Palm Springs to Seattle, where she helped pioneer the fest’s innovative Works-in-Progress sidebar. An alumna of Wesleyan University’s esteemed film studies program and UCLA’s graduate program in critical studies, Lael has taught courses on film analysis, cinema history and the business of film to undergraduates in Los Angeles and Sarajevo.
