Would you be afraid if a man who has admitted to raping nearly 40 women was your next-door neighbor? Apparently, a lot of people are, including the Los Angeles County prosecutors.
A Santa Clara County judge ruled today that Christopher Hubbart, a 62-year-old convicted serial rapist, can be released from the Coalinga State Hospital where he is being held to reside in Palmdale. If released, Hubbart would have to wear a GPS monitoring device, and potentially out as early as December, CBS Los Angeles Reports.
Hubbert admitted to raping nearly 40 women in the 1970s and 1980s in Los Angeles and Bay Area, with 26 of them in Los Angeles County, according to KPCC. He was dubbed the "Pillowcase Rapist" for covering women's heads with pillowcases to muffle their screams. He had been in and out of prison between 1972 to 1999, and was considered a "mentally disordered sex offender."
In May, Judge Gilbert Brown had ruled that Hubbart could be released, but the location was unclear until today. The Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey and Supervisor Supervisor Mike Antonovich have been vehemently fighting against this ruling. They have a window of 45 days to file a formal complaint with Judge Brown before the matter is finalized, which they intend on doing.
“Perhaps the judge should take him, if he wants him out so badly, let him live in Santa Clara in his neighborhood,” Antonovich said, according to CBS Los Angeles.
