Topline:
Residents living near the Chiquita Canyon Landfill and persistent odor problems can now apply for relocation assistance and other relief through a new website set up by the landfill's operators.
The website is called the Chiquita Canyon Community Relief Program and you can apply here.
Who qualifies: Residents of Val Verde, Live Oak, Hasley Hills, Hillcrest Parkway, Hasley Canyon and Stevenson Ranch qualify for financial aid for any expenses put toward mitigating the odors. Those expenses include:
- Temporary relocation
- Home hardening
- Increased utility bills
Residents need to register their household before applying. You can do that here.
Why now: The website comes after the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board denied a request by Chiquita Canyon Landfill operators to expand.
It's the latest in a series of setbacks for the Chiquita Canyon Landfill. It's been accused of producing toxic chemicals and polluting neighboring communities for months. Federal and state regulators recently cited the landfill for violations.
Background: Last year, the landfill created a Utility Relief Program to reimburse residents for their electric utility bills in May and October. A reminder that the deadline to apply for the utility relief program is March 31. You can apply here.
