Child Care, Unfiltered: A Virtual Event

Thursday, June 17, 2021 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

If you’ve got a small kid, chances are this year you’ve thought a LOT about child care.

Some parents are working from home, others can’t. Child care providers have taken on extra costs and risks to keep families safe and their doors open. Family, friends, and neighbors have stepped up to take care of kids so parents can work.

What does life look like through the eyes of those who take care of Southern California’s little ones?

Last summer KPCC/LAist distributed cameras to 12 child care providers, educators and caregivers to document their lives during the pandemic.

The result is an intimate collection of photos and stories that give a real, #nofilter take on the wonderful, all-consuming, essential work of child care from diapers to bills, big feelings and snacktime. The stories, published on LAist.com starting in May, will provide a glimpse into the multiple roles child care providers and caregivers play, their economic reality, and what keeps them going.

On June 17, KPCC/LAist early childhood reporter Mariana Dale hosted a candid conversation between child care providers and early childhood decision-makers. Join us for an unfiltered look at the struggles and triumphs of caring for young children.
