The full 'American Idiot' ensemble performs the titular song on stage. The lead singer stands center stage in a flannel shirt, white tee, and slacks as he sings. Behind him the lyrics "don't want to be an American idiot" are displayed across a steel awning.

CTG creative director Snehal Desai directs this ambitious production of American Idiot, based on the Green Day album of the same name, with both deaf and hearing actors at the Taper. The politically charged show – being put on at an, ahem, interesting moment in the election cycle – tells a story of rebellion and uses Green Day’s punk rock soundtrack to expose the cracks in our fragile system. Desai notes “we have the makings of what truly great theatre should be: a show that is timely, resonant, boundary-pushing, inclusive, and electrifying.” It’s the fourth collaboration between Deaf Theater West and CTG and the shows are all fully accessible with ASL and integrated captioning at every performance.
